๐ช Murder Mystery
A roleplay party where every guest plays a suspect โ and one of them secretly drew the killer card. Investigate, question, and unmask the murderer.
What is it?
A murder mystery party game turns any evening into a structured whodunnit. Each guest receives a character sheet with a name, backstory, and scripted answers. Before the game starts, everyone draws a numbered card from a bowl โ one card is marked with an X, and that person is the murderer. Nobody else knows, not even the host.
The victim is a fictional character who is already dead when the story begins โ no one has to sit out or play a passive role. Every player is a suspect and fully in the game from start to finish.
The evening unfolds across five structured parts: an opening narration, three investigation rounds where players question each other, and a final accusation and reveal. The host guide walks you through exactly what to read and when.
What you receive
๐ฌ Files are delivered instantly to your email after purchase. No physical items are shipped โ you decide how many guests to invite.
How to prepare
The game supports 4โ14 players. Print one character sheet per guest. You can email them in advance โ guests don't need to memorise anything; they simply read their answers aloud during the game.
Number a set of cards 1 through your total player count. Mark the highest-numbered card with an X (the murderer). Fold all cards and place them in a bowl or hat โ everyone draws one at the start.
Read through the narration script before the party. Mark only the paragraphs relevant to the characters in play โ skip sections for characters not included and move on naturally without pausing.
A moody playlist, candles, and simple table decor go a long way. Costumes are completely optional. No dress code is required โ guests can jump into character on the spot.
How to play
The host reads the opening narration aloud, setting the scene and revealing the crime. Players then introduce their characters one by one using their character sheet. Everyone also draws a numbered card from the bowl โ whoever holds the X is the murderer, known only to themselves.
The host reads a short narration update for each round. Then each player asks 2 questions to one other player of their choice โ the questioned player reads their answer directly from their character sheet. There's no memorisation required.
Alternatively, the host or a designated detective can ask all the questions for a more investigative, formal vibe.
Each player makes their accusation in turn โ no one defends themselves yet. Then final statements are read aloud in numbered card order: players with innocent cards go first, and the person holding the X card speaks last, revealing themselves as the murderer.
Host tips
The host doesn't know who the murderer is
The X card is drawn secretly โ even you won't know who the murderer is until the final reveal. That means you can play a character yourself, act as narrator, or do both, without spoiling anything.
Highlight only the sections you need
Before the party, mark only the paragraphs in the narration that apply to the characters in play. When you reach a section for a character not in your game, skip it and continue smoothly โ no need to pause or explain.
Encourage note-taking
Remind guests to jot down what they hear during the questioning rounds. Key things to watch for: inconsistencies between statements, changes in detail when pressed, and anyone who deflects suspicion unusually quickly.
Works great online too
Email character sheets in advance and run the game over Zoom. The structured questioning rounds work well in a video call โ no breakout rooms needed, just take turns in order.
FAQ
No โ the victim is a fictional character who is already dead when the game begins. Every player is a suspect and participates fully. Nobody sits out.
Yes! The host can play a character, act as narrator, or both. Because the murderer is assigned randomly by the card draw, even the host doesn't know who the killer is until the very end.
Not at all. Guests read their answers directly from their character sheet during the questioning rounds. You can email sheets in advance so guests feel more comfortable, but it's not required โ they can jump in on the night.
The game works fine with one fewer player. Just skip that character's sections in the narration and questioning rounds โ the host guide explains how to handle this smoothly.
Not at all. Drinks and snacks work perfectly. The structured questioning rounds actually work better at a table, but the game doesn't require a full sit-down meal.
Yes! Email character sheets in advance and run the game over Zoom. The turn-based questioning rounds work well in a video call โ take turns in order and everyone can follow along easily.
